Laubach Literacy New Brunswick and its affiliated literacy councils depend on its volunteer tutors to provide free, confidential tutoring to adults in communities throughout New Brunswick using its Each One Teach One method.
Laubach Literacy tutors are men and women of all ages from many different backgrounds. These volunteers are committed to helping others improve their reading, writing and basic math skills.
Laubach Literacy New Brunswick provides tutors with:
An orientation to literacy issues
Twenty hours of basic tutor training
Access to a variety of teaching and learning materials
Ongoing support from the Student/ Tutor Coordinator
Laubach Literacy New Brunswick expects volunteer tutors will:
Commit to work with a student up to four hours a week for one year
Participate in basic tutor training
Maintain total confidentiality regarding their student
A good tutor is one who :
Is responsive to needs of the individual student
Facilitates the student’s learning
Respects the student and the prior knowledge the student brings to the learning experience
Is empathetic, caring and interested in the student
Is creative in adapting to suit the individual student’s needs
Is enthusiastic and willing to keep learning
Can provide constructive feedback
Welcomes the student’s input
Is well organized for each lesson
