MLC was formed with 23 Charter members in September, 1978
Has been providing one-to-one tutoring for more than 40 years.
For the past 36 years, MLC has been holding tutor training workshops and writing workshops
We partner with local libraries in celebration of International Literacy Day and Family Literacy Day Events
In 2006, MLC became a member of the Miramichi Partners in Literacy consisting of the Miramichi Literacy Council, New Brunswick Libraries, Horizon Health Network, Mango, Community Inclusion Network and School District 16. Together we stage community events to raise Literacy awareness in both official languages.
MLC continues to look for new and innovative ways to engage new learners and erase that stigma that prevents adults from learning to read or improving their literacy skills.
Miramichi Literacy Council offers free and confidential one-to-one adult tutoring in literacy, numeracy and life skills. We also partner with local partners to provide Cooking to Learn, the International Literacy Luncheon and other programs in order to bring literacy to more people in our community.
The Miramichi Literacy Council is run by a board of volunteers including:
Pat Hegan, President/Tutor-Student Coordinator
Sonja Mahabir, Secretary/Treasurer
Charlotte Loggie, Cooking to Learn Program Coordinator
Maureen Connell
Juanita Hamilton
Carol Ann Hilchey
Mary King
Become a Volunteer
MLC is always looking for volunteers. Whether you want to become a tutor (training provided using the Laubach Method of one-to-one tutoring), help out with special events and fundraisers, join the board, or assist with administrative tasks (such as data entry, social media), we are sure we can offer you a worthwhile volunteer experience. Please note that tutor training is offered once or twice a year (depending on our learner requirements) and is offered through a combination of online training and one six-hour, in-person training session that is held on either a Saturday or Sunday.
