Laubach Literacy New Brunswick was established in 1981 and since then - without realizing its full potential yet - has begun a Literacy Revolution across the province. Our mission is to provide programs that improve the literacy skills of New Brunswickers.
The people who are supported by Laubach Literacy NB and its affiliated councils across the province are your teens, your parents, your neighbours and co-workers, and may even include some of your closest friends. Our free and confidential, one-to-one tutoring services welcome everyone between the ages of 16 and 106. For those who don't see it, and for those who hide it, literacy is, in effect an "invisible challenge". Many of these adults either cannot read, or have difficultly reading print/digital materials encountered in their daily lives, including receipts and bills, food and medical labels, as well as bank statements and legal documentation, just to name a few. Our learners may be employed or self-employed, and because they may be unfamiliar with the complexity of some reading, writing, numerical or digital content, they tend to avoid situations or rely on others for support to get the job done. There is a considerable number of adults with low literacy skills who are unable to participate in the work force, and if they do, they are often the first to lose their jobs when times get tough. If they are fortunate to keep their jobs, the chance for advancement is slim to none. Most adults with low literacy skills become very anxious or ashamed, and they will find ways to hide their difficulties. They don't want to be found out for fear of being ridiculed. We understand that fear. It's not easy to ask for help, but that is why we are here. We recognize the right of all New Brunswickers to improve their skills, to access learning opportunities and enjoy a better, healthier quality of life. That's why we continually promote safe and effective learning solutions that are free and confidential. The possibilities are literally limitless with the help of Laubach Literacy NB's regional councils and their local tutors. It is our hope that the words on this page are creating a spark within you and instill a sense of hope and responsibility toward the people in your community. That you now have a deeper understanding of why reaching out for help as an adult takes a lot of courage. In recent years, we continue to see an increase in adults reaching out for help with their literacy challenges. That tells us that our work is as important today as it was 40 years ago. It also demonstrates that through our work (seven affiliated literacy councils across the province), the stigmas attached to "illiteracy" are fading more and more, year by year. |

ADULTS WHO WE EMPOWER THROUGH LITERACY:
Despite the level of awareness, education and personal contacts practiced regularly, there are still many people, those who really need our help, who are not getting the message. Equally, there are as many who are not aware that we exist. If they are aware, they may fear they won't be able to afford it - not knowing that our services are FREE! |
