Laubach Literacy New Brunswick

(Moncton, New Brunswick – Sept. 2, 2014) – Have some new or gently-used books that you no longer want? Here’s your chance to start that fall cleaning and support a New Brunswick non-profit group at the same time!

A provincial organization that helps adults improve their literacy skills is accepting donations of books and other items for a charity fundraiser it will host in mid-October in Moncton.

Laubach Literacy New Brunswick is organizing its first-ever “Bookstravaganza: A Really Big, Really Good, Really Fun Charity Book Sale”, slated for Saturday, Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 19 in the gymnasium of Edith Cavell School, 125 Park Street. Donations for the event are being accepted starting today (Sept. 2) at RBC Royal Bank branches across Greater Moncton as well as at Premiere Van Lines, 663 Malenfant Blvd., Dieppe. (Full details at end of release.)

“We’ll happily accept new and gently-used hard- and soft-cover books, as well as DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and puzzles,” says Deanna Allen, Executive Director of Laubach Literacy New Brunswick. “As a non-profit helping individuals across the province improve their reading, writing and math skills, we think the book sale will be a very appropriate fundraising event – and a great community happening!”

Most books and other items to be sold will range in price from $1 to $3 each, says Allen, adding she hopes the low costs will encourage a large crowd, including many who might not otherwise be able to afford the purchase of reading material.

“As well, we hope the event will help people better understand Laubach Literacy, and maybe even encourage some to sign up for our free, one-to-one tutoring or to volunteer as a tutor,” she says.

Laubach Literacy New Brunswick has councils around the province made up of volunteers who help adults improve their literacy skills through the free, confidential tutoring program. Last year, about 300 New Brunswickers took part, a number Allen says she would love to see rise significantly, since studies continue to show that more than half of working-age residents have literacy skills below the level needed to cope with the demands of everyday life and work.

Partners who are making Bookstravaganza possible include RBC Royal Bank, Premiere Van Lines, Razor Creative, KPMG, Jabez Expression Web Design, Anglophone East School District, D.R. Recycling, Cache Property Management and the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick.
